3CR Mural (Grant amount $5000) Melbourne, VIC
Three local Melbourne artists Bindi Cole, Tom Sevil and Reko Rennie will create a mural on the exterior walls of community radio station 3CR. The radio station was established in 1976 to provide a voice for those denied access to the mass media, particularly the working class, women, Indigenous people and the many community groups and community issues discriminated against in and by the mass media. The station is situated in Melbourne's inner city in an area rich in cultural diversity and the mural will reflect this history, as well as the role of 3CR as a hub of community activism.

Youth Express (Grant amount $5000) Pymble, NSW
Ku-ring-gai Council (Youth Services) will run a public art project where young local artists are commissioned to develop public art. This will be a collaborative project which will maximise youth participation and create a sense of ownership. The project will engage artists who; display a high level of commitment, can demonstrate artistic ability, have an understanding of the planning required for such a project and are willing to work together to deliver a good community outcomes. 

Monday 21 (Grant amount $5000) West Preston, VIC
Monday 21 is a billboard size (12 X 3.5 m) digital photograph of an entry in the artists sister's diary at 9 years old during “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland. The normalisation of daily violence is highlighted by a child's acute awareness of their absence on Monday 21 – “today people blew up nothing”. The project will be to tour the existing billboard installing it in public sites during the summer of 2009/10. 

Evolution Videowall (Grant amount $5000) Middle Park, VIC
Safari Team and the 2010 Next Wave Festival present “Evolution Videowall” - a series of imaged lightboxes which will be installed in a linear sequence in a section of underground train tunnel in the Melbourne City Loop. These lightboxes will be placed in such a way that a short animation-like image sequence (videowall) can be viewed through the window of a moving train. The resulting "videowall" will be of 20-40 seconds in length. 

Abstract Intervention (Grant amount $5000) East Melbourne, VIC.
Rowena Martinech will create a work in the centre of the business precinct of Melbourne, exposing her work to an unexpecting audience. The luminous work aims to transform neutral environments into the spectacular, stimulating thought and reflection in the viewer utilizing colour and text. A glass entry facade will be encapsulated in saturated colour through the collaged application of painted vinyl. The abstract expressionist imagery will contrast grey urban & conservative surrounds, challenging the viewers perception of their environment. 

ST5K (Grant amount $4936.75) South Plympton, SA
ST5K street art festival will take place alongside the Format Festival on the whole of Peel street, Adelaide. This street will be closed to traffic, an amazing venue for a project that brings together the best artists from the street in an open, friendly environment so they can connect and share their techniques and meet the other names behind the artwork.
The vision for ST5K is to give young artists a legal outlet for their art, to connected with a wider art community and other young artists so they can create networks to run their own street art exhibitions and work with graphic designers and illustrators to find work. Works created will be projected onto the walls using the GRL bike projector and also painted onto a huge recycled box wall, pieces will also be exhibited of canvas / wood pieces in the 5000 Gallery.

CD MANUFACTURING:

Ophelia of the Spirits (Grant amount $3882.50) Newtown, NSW
Angela Little is Ophelia of the Spirits. Angela will use her grant toward the CD manufacture of 1000 full length albums. The purpose of the grant will not only increase immediate revenue through sales, but will also allow her to pursue other opportunities for growth - for example, the AMP (Australian Music Prize) which requires an album release for eligibility. Most importantly it will mean that Angela would have made the album independently, a great start to long-term self-sustainability.

Maya Jupiter (Grant amount $4000) Croydon, NSW
Maya Jupiter will press and package 3000 full length albums. The CD will allow Maya to generate income by increasing her profile as an independent artist leading to more bookings, broader distribution & paid guest appearances. Profit will also be made from CD sales & APRA royalties. This will contribute to Maya’s development as an artist, furthering her career and enabling her to make music full time. 

Ngaiire Joseph (Grant amount $1991) Ashfield, NSW
Ngaiire will use her grant towards the manufacture of 1000 copies of a full length album. The CD will be sent to media, distributed through MGM and sold at live shows. This will put Ngaiire in front financially by being able to increase audiences and further the proliferation of her musical genre. A small amount of the albums will also be made available through online stores. 

Tha Deadly Boyz (Grant amount $1342) Mount Marker, SA
Stinga T and Big Sexy are Adelaide / Perth rap duo Tha Deadly Boyz. TDB will use their Jump Grant to manufacture a run of 500 copies of their upcoming second album. The album will allow TDB to reach a wider audience and the profit from album sales will help further TDB’s promotion by enabling them to make music videos, future albums and more touring. 

TOURING:

Buddy Knox Blues Band WA tour  (Grant amount $4000) Tamworth, NSW
Buddy Knox plans to tour Western Australia in conjunction with his appearance at the Bridgetown Blues Festival. The tour will take place in November and December 2009 and Buddy hope to raise his national profile as a dedicated and professional Blues artist. The success of the tour will be quantified by audience attendance and CD sales at gigs. 

Ajak Kwai Womex (Grant amount $4000) Northcote, VIC
Ajak Kwai will attend Womex in Copenhagen to promote herself, create new markets, seek CD distribution and touring opportunities. She will then travel to Chile following an invitation from established Chilean musician Nano Stern to collaborate on new music with both him & Australian / Chilean musician Pin Rada, While in Chile, Ajak will perform, promote & distribute her current release. By undertaking this project, Ajak intends to create a new sound in the Australian world music market. 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Miriam Lieberman (Grant amount $4000) Bondi, NSW
Miriam Lieberman is going to travel to Mali, West Africa to study Kora under the guidance Toumani Diabate, one of the foremost Kora players in the world. Miriam is seeking to further develop and hone her technical and rhythmical skills (both instrumentally and vocally), as well as improve her kora playing melodically. She will acquire an understanding of the context within which kora music was developed, which will greatly enhance singing and playing of the kora in the West African style.

Rob Imeson (Grant amount $2070) Yamba, NSW
Rob Imeson will attend the CMAA Australian College of Country Music. The college has an intensive, two-week residential program, held at the fully-equipped Calrossy School in Tamworth, NSW. The college prides itself on developing and enhancing each student’s own area of need. Specialist tuition is delivered in the areas of songwriting, vocal technique and delivery, business, management and marketing studies, personal and performance techniques, instrumental technique and music theory. 

Tim Clarkson (Grant amount $4000) Kirribilli, NSW
Tim Clarkson will travel abroad to New York to study Mark Turner’s ground-breaking development of Post-Coltrane harmony and improvisation using polytonality in improvisation on the saxophone. His harmonic techniques are a powerful influence on his own musical development. Turner uses a unique system of playing polytonally. He is known as one of the best in the world and an outstanding educator. 

MARKETING:

Sierra Fin (Grant amount $4000) Stanmore, NSW
Sierra Fin will use their grant to work with a publicist and photographer to promote an album release and corresponding tour. The result will be increased revenue through higher album and ticket sales. Sierra Fin also hope to gain interest from industry professionals for future projects and advice, mainly publishers to lineup a publishing deal. 

The Casio Brothers (Grant amount $3842) Abbottsford, VIC
The Casio Brothers and Demolition B-Girl will market and promote themselves with a CD / DVD, brochures and online material to schools, councils, festivals and events around Australia. They hope that this round of marketing will create full time work as self-sustaining musicians, create revenue towards recordings and give the band the financial ability to support disadvantages kids and communities in Australia with music programs, workshops and tuition. 

THE JACQUI McCOY (GEIA) TRUST – TOTAL FUNDING $10,000

From Little Things (Grant amount $5000) Elwood, VIC
Pip Kelly will produce an art-doco film combining photos & interviews made by a group of inspirational young Sudanese mothers from the River Nile Learning Centre, who’re determined to continue their education in the face of complex resettlement and integration issues. Pip Kelly and Ezeldin Deng will give photography & interview workshops with the women, addressing relevant themes such as Future Aspirations & Babies. The photographs will become a Blog that the women maintain. I will make a film with that incorporating the photos & interviews.

Hip Hop Project (Grant amount $5000) Sydney, NSW
The Hip Hop project is a series of hip hop skills development workshops for The Wild Cats; who consist of seven members, all of whom identify as having a disability. The workshops would run over three weeks with Australian hip hop artist, Morganics. The sessions will be integral in leading the group to become a more self sustained, tight knit ensemble with a well formed, structured & strong hip hop routine  & will also work to raise the profile of people with a disability. The routine created through workshops held at the Powerhouse Youth Theatre in Fairfield will then be able to be performed at various events, festivals and hip hop gigs and hopefully lead to paid gigs for The WIld Cats. 

MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP INITIATIVE – TOTAL FUNDING $40,000

The management workshop aims to address the lack of practical strategies when managing a band or performer in the early phase of their career. This workshop brings together a group of significant professionals in the music industry, including Philip Stevens, Correne Wilkie, John Watson, Brett Oaten, Simon Moor, Sebastian Chase, Sally Howland and Russell Thomas to name just a few! 

All of these representatives from the music industry will share their knowledge and offer strategic advice on ways to enhance performers’ opportunities in the music industry. The Management Workshop will be delivered as a three day intensive, including customised personal advice.

Of the 99 applications received we are happy to announce the following successful participants in this year’s workshop:

  • Abby Gee manages Blues and Roots act Liz Stringer. Abby has overseen Liz record two full length albums, secured support slots for her with acts such as Mia Dyson, Jen Cloher, Ash Grunwald and play numerous festival slots. Abby will assist Liz will embark on her first US tour in the not too distant future. Brunswick, VIC
  • Anita George is a natural story teller, evocative folk singer / songwriter and truly independent artist. George honed her craft over several years of touring festivals and venues across Australia and Canada including NXNE Festival (Canada) and will soon release her second full length album, followed by a national tour of Australia.   • Anto Skene currently manages two garage rock bands – The Jacknives and The Once Overs. The Jacknives have independently released three CDs and shared the stage with the likes of The Misfits, Nekromantix, The Horrorpops, The Fireballs and Slim Jim Phantom. Anto will soon assist The Jacknives release their fourth CD, sales of which will fund their first Japanese tour! Brunswick, VIC
  • Ben Preece manages two acts, The Hungry Kids of Hungary and Tara Simmons. All three acts have garnered national radio airplay and have successfully toured Australia several times over, playing headline shows, support slots and making festival appearances. Ben will guide his acts through the recording and touring process whilst constantly reaching out to new audiences. Chapel Hill, QLD
  • Caroline Johnston manages roots band BONJAH. BONJAH have independently sold 17,000 CDs, played 550 shows over nine national tours – including a support for The Who and busked relentlessly to loyal fans nationwide. Their debut album ‘Until Dawn’ has been in the AIR charts since it’s release. Caroline wishes to explore new initiatives to be able to work full time and exclusively with BONJAH on a global stage.   • Clara Iaccarino manages indie-pop act Fergus Brown. Fergus’ music has featured prominently on US TV and he has already performed with Martha Wainwright, Jens Lekman, Sarah Blasko and New Buffalo. He was also the winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, an emerging artists award scheme overseen by the Lennon Foundation in New York City. Clara is looking to connect and learn with likeminded independent managers at the workshop. Surry Hills, NSW
  • Dallas Frasca manages herself and describes herself as a modern day troubadour. She is an energetic and remarkable live performer. In 2005 she won Triple J's 'Light Your Fuse' competition and from there she has played many of the major festivals in Australia and abroad including Bluesfest, Falls Fest, Pyramid Rock, International Earth Day in Montreal among others.   • Elana Stone manages her band of the same name. They have toured Europe, traveling through 6 different countries, won the Musicoz competition and have recently had high rotation on Triple J. Elana Stone will build her bands fan base by releasing new album ‘Your Anniversary’ followed by national tour of Australia. Redfern, NSW
  • Emma Haslam manages up and coming indie rock band The Shiny Brights. In a very short space of time the Shiny Brights have supported bands such as The Living End, The Vines and The Grates and have appeared at Parklife, Big Day Out and Fuse Festival. The band was also invited to play CMJ showcase festival in new York. Emma hopes to leave the workshop with inspiring ideas and a clear vision of what’s ahead for the band. Prospect, SA
  • Jade Masters manages and plays drums for Indigenous group The Yabu Band. The band have performed for the Prime Minister and Premier of WA, appeared on national TV and have just released their debut album ‘Gundulla – We Dance.’ Jade is looking for ways The Yabu Band can travel the country passing their knowledge and stories onto a greater audience.   • Jess Ribeiro is a singer / songwriter and also manager for her band Jess Ribeiro and The Bone Collectors. Since the band’s formation, they have toured the country and had national radio airplay on Triple J, picking up an unearthed spotlight and New Crop Artist feature along the way. Jess is looking for inspiration and ideas to release, promote and tour her band’s debut album. Darwin, NT
  • Kristy Brown is label manager of Sub Continental Dub Company and dubstep act Westernsynthetics. With national radio airplay, several single releases, high profile supports and festival slots, Kristy would like to see Westernsynthetics become more recognized on a global scale. The workshop will be a catalyst for her to generate new management ideas, receive guidance & support which in turn will benefit her artist. Broadway, NSW
  • Laura Kelly manages acoustic act Paul Appelkamp. Paul has toured the east coast and had three previous releases, which has established a loyal fan base of listeners. Paul will continue touring Australia extensively, building his fan base and aims to achieve triple J airplay in the near future. Cronulla, NSW
  • Luke Penman is the manager of electro-pop duo Radio Spectacular!!! Luke and the band have secured a licensing agreement for national television airplay. Now they look toward touring interstate on the back of the release of their third EP. Redwood Park, SA
  • Maxine Harman manages punk rock band Asleep In The Park. Maxine has overseen several releases and international tours. Maxine wishes to grow Asleep In The Park’s Australian fan base and gain new ideas to cover ground costs for future touring in Australia and overseas. Richmond, VIC
  • Michael Correa manages Colombian Roots band Watussi. The group have toured internationally and their debut album has been nominated for an ARIA award. Watussi will record their second album on return to Australia. Bondi Junction, NSW
  • Mihirangi Fisher is a self-managed soul singer / songwriter. Mihirangi has had five releases and has toured all over the world playing the festival circuits. Mihirangi is currently building an independent label with more recording and international tours ahead. Lower Beechmont, QLD
  • Ngaire Joseph manages and fronts nu-soul band NGAIIRE. Rolling Stone has named her as an artist “to look out for” and has she has also appeared in the ARIA charts through her featured vocals on a Paul Mac track. Extensive touring is on the horizon for this emerging artist. Ashfield, NSW
  • Rachel Davison manages two electro-pop acts The Transients and Brash and Sassy. The Transients were named Artist of the Year at the 2008 MusicOz Awards. Brash and Sassy have played festival slots at Parkliffe and The Big Day Out. Rachel will take both bands from being WA-based to being recognized on a national level. Perth, WA
  • Sarah Heald manages Charles Du Cane. Charles has performed at Falls Festival after winning a Triple J Unearthed competition and has toured extensively since. Next year Sarah will oversee the promotion and release of Charles Du Cane’s second album. North Hobart, TAS
  • Sarah Patrick manages hip-hop act Indigenous Intrudaz. The Duo have won a MusicOz Award for the Best Indigenous Hip Hop Group. Sarah will be guiding the Indigenous Intrudaz through the release of their debut EP – Letcha Know. Brisbane, QLD
  • Skye Riggs is the manager of alt-folk artist Vorn Doolette. Vorn has supported the likes of Lior and Kate Miller-Heidke and released his debut album to critical acclaim. Vorn will continue to build audiences by touring Australia. Torrens park, SA
  • Stew Riddle plays in and manages art-rockers Drawn From Bees. The band write, record and release a new batch of music every six months and have enjoyed support from independent radio stations around the country. Writing, recording and touring are on the cards in the near future. St Lucia, QLD
  • Tim McArtney is a self managed folk-pop artist playing under the name mcArtney. After the release of his debut EP, mcArtney's ‘Circles’ won best song on an Australian music sampler at MUSEXPO in Los Angeles. Tim will soon release his second EP. Glebe, NSW

INDIGENOUS RECORDING COMPETITION TOTAL FUNDING $25,000


Indigenous Intrudaz to record 5 track EP

Damian Bani and Douglas Patrick are the Indigenous Intrudaz, a socially conscious Hip Hop act from Inala, Queensland. They will travel to Sydney to record a five-track EP with Tony Buchen in his studio. The grant will cover all costs, including Tony’s fee, travel, accommodation, mixing, mastering and other studio costs, and the production of 1,000 copies of the completed EP.

Maningrida Project/Black on White (Grant amount $3,000) North Sydney, NSW
Belinda Mason and Mervyn Bishop will travel to Maningrida, Northern Territory to conduct photography workshops with five Indigenous participants nominated by the Maningrida Jobs Education and Training Aboriginal Corporation. The goal of the workshops is to develop attendees’ photographic skills and to empower them to produce an exhibition of images documenting their own culture.

Performers for Peace (Grant amount $1,800) West End, QLD.
Delene Cuddihy will organise a series of Street Theatre workshops to be run by Anna Yen called ‘Performers for Peace’. Participants will be drawn from the female memberships of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, other peace and conservation organisations, student bodies and the general Brisbane community. The workshops will culminate in performances, as tools for community education and political protest, in Brisbane and Rockhampton.

Express your Reality (Grant amount $5,000) Northcote, VIC
Dustin Barter will produce at least three issues of a multimedia zine entitled ‘Express Your Reality’ which is envisaged as a tool for creating intercultural dialogue between viewers and contributors on social issues. The zine will invite visual and written contributions from artists, photographers, illustrators, poets and creative writers. The artworks will then be exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney and the completed publications will be distributed through zine networks, schools, train stations, community centres, bars, cafes and online.

Step-Up (Night Café) (Grant amount $4,961.50) Milton, QLD
Katie Gregg will engage with marginalised young people who frequent the Red Cross Night Cafe in the Brisbane CBD to record a hip hop album. Through the project, entitled ‘Step-Up (Night Cafe)’, Katie seeks to raise awareness and knowledge of mental health issues and to reduce the stigma attached to seeking help; in this way she hopes to promote positive mental health via hip hop expression.

ROXSTOP: Community Education & Action Kit (Grant amount $4,150) Mullumbimby, NSW
Treena Lenthall will produce a community education and action resource kit that can be used to lobby politicians and union representatives, and raise public awareness about the proposed expansion to the Olympic Dam uranium mine near Roxby Downs. The resource kits will contain a number of informative documents including the short film ‘All That Glitters Is Not Gold’ and practical tips on how and who to lobby.

Sonic Elevation (Grant amount $3,000) Footscray, VIC
Carolyn Parry will facilitate a creative dance workshop entitled “Sonic Elevation” with seven Indigenous youth from far north Queensland. The workshop/ exchange programme will see Carolyn Parry, Lamaroc and another acrobatic instructor foster the participants’ talents and work towards a final public performance at ‘The Crom’.

Lullabies Our Mothers Sang (Grant amount $2,000) Kensington, VIC
‘Lullabies Our Mothers Sang’ is a project developed in response to a community request to explore the theme of parenthood from the perspectives of being someone’s child and a mother. Paola Bilbrough, in collaboration with other artists, will craft a documentary film surrounding the stories of thirteen women from the Horn of Africa about how their past rituals and relationships with their parents contribute to their lives now. The film will be screened at Melbourne’s Big West Arts Festival and the Sun Theatre, Yarraville and will be submitted to independent television networks, the Melbourne Fringe and other festivals.

Art of difference (Grant amount $5,000) Albert Park, VIC
Cusader Hillis will stage the ‘Art of Difference’, a major Arts Symposium at Gasworks Arts Park, Albert Park, Victoria. The programme of forums and interactive workshops will provide a platform for people from disability communities to meet, exchange ideas, debate, experience and discuss arts with the Symposium’s creators. There will be opportunities to discuss key issues facing disability arts practice and meet potential collaborators.

Fatherhood Festival Taree (Grant amount $5,000) Bobin, NSW
Peter Glencross, on behalf of Manning Uniting Church Building Community Lines, will coordinate the Fatherhood Festival Taree, a week of activities to be targeted especially at disadvantaged families in the greater Taree City Council area. The project seeks to improve family wellbeing by focussing on fathers and celebrating their important roles both in the family and the community and will culminate in a Fathers’ Day event to entertain, motivate and provide services and education to enhance parenting skills.

Political Street Theatre (Grant amount $2,000) Prospect, SA
Edwin Kemp Attrill is an emerging actor and director who will develop an original series of four street theatre performances entitled ‘Hit hard, and get out fast’ with the focus on creating debate and awareness within the community on human rights abuse, the degradation of the environment and the anti-nuclear cause. The pieces will raise maximum political awareness through the use of bold colours, high energy live music and circus skills, and will be performed in the Adelaide CBD, at political rallies, marches and protests and other arts events.

 

PROFESSIONAL & SKILLS DEVELOPMENT TOTAL FUNDING $20,919


Harry Jakamarra Gray (Grant amount $2,225) Cable Beach, WA.
Harry has a passion for old time, country and blues music and has played support to such acts as The Waifs and Eskimo Joe. He will travel to Varanasi, India to further his knowledge as a professional Mohan Veena player under the tutelage of Deobrat Mishra at the Benares Academy of Music.


Chris Williams (Grant amount $2,482) Camperdown, NSW.

Chris will travel to Devon, England to complete an Advanced Composition course with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies at the Dartington International Summer School. He hopes to focus on elements of specific instrumentation, and musical organisation of material and structure in composition; to refine his individual artistic voice; and to gain an insight into the demands of professional classical composition.

Roy Ramirez (Grant amount $1,535) Isabella Plains, ACT.
Roy conducts a community Rondalla string band called The Rondanihan Ensemble which provides free performances and tuition to interested instrumentalists. He will travel to Melbourne to participate in the Symphony Services Australia ‘The Beat Starts Here’ Conductor Development Course under director Brett Kelly in order to enhance and further develop his conducting skills.

Leah Barclay (Grant amount $2,949) Cooroy, QLD.
Leah will travel to Mumbai and Aranmula, India to undertake innovative composition, Mridangam and Carnatic singing lessons with Rajesh Mehta, Subhash Kumar and Santhosh Edathu, respectively. In the process she hopes to explore and develop new skills in Carnatic composition, intercultural collaboration, notational methods, improvisation and performance. Leah is a versatile and dynamic composer, new media artist and educator.

Bryce Jacobs (Grant amount $3,000) Carlton, NSW.
Bryce is a writer and performer heavily influenced by music from film. He will travel to Los Angeles, USA to participate in a residential mentorship programme with Christopher Young at Tilden House to develop his compositional, orchestration and performance skills and forge his career in film making.

Fenella Edwards (Grant amount $1,200) O’Connor, ACT.
Fenella will undertake lessons with Ross Garrett aka D’Opus at the Mercury Switch Lab in Canberra. She will develop sampling, scratching and sequencing skills as well as general proficiency in production, vocal recording and layering with the intention of completing three original tracks. Fenella’s love of poetry led her to start rapping and she has released two tracks on different compilations in recent years.

Zoe Miller (Grant amount$2,948) Marrickville, NSW.
Zoe is a spoken word artist who performs at events around Australia and uses hip hop to empower disadvantaged young people. She will complete Digital Audio, Abelton Live, and Protools classes at the University of Technology, Sydney to advance her production skills in digital recording and editing, and in sound design and composition.

Rogerthat (Grant amount $2,780) Bonogin, QLD.
Jesse Bailey, Jimmy Young, Lachlan Leckie and Dan Briffa, of reggae-rock band Rogerthat, will travel to Dee Why, NSW to undertake lessons with Matthew McHugh from The Beautiful Girls. The aims are to become more proficient in their chosen instruments, to cultivate their composition and song writing skills, and enhance their development of melodic and harmonic structures.

Dale Rickert (Grant amount $500) Wilston, QLD
Dale will undertake private cello tuition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary.

Ria Soemardjo (Grant amount $1,300) Thornbury, VIC.
Ria will expand her skills in the Taketina Rhythm Process under the tutelage of Tania Bosak, whilst furthering her knowledge of structures for solo improvisation and song writing and gaining proficiency to teach traditional music, rhythm and improvisation. THE JACQUI McCOY (GEIA) TRUST – TOTAL FUNDING $9,000


Indigenous First Discovery Books (Grant amount $3,000) Warnambool, VIC.

Sarah Prescott will coordinate the publication and distribution of culturally specific Indigenous children’s literature for the 0-5 age bracket. ‘Indigenous First Discovery Books’ aspire to record local Indigenous stories and symbols, and educate all Australians about Indigenous culture. In this way Indigenous authors and artists will be empowered and sustainable sources of income established.

There Goes the Neighbourhood (Grant amount $4,000) Newtown, NSW
Keg de Souza will produce a one-off, 24-page full colour art magazine comprising socially active artworks which focus on the processes of gentrification in Redfern, NSW. ‘There goes the Neighbourhood’ will be developed during a collaborative residency at the Redfern Community Centre in conjunction with an exhibition, workshops and film screening programme.

Recording at CYI in Sydney (Grant amount $2,000) Erskinville, NSW
Ian Wilson, an Indigenous emerging artist, will record five original tracks at “Sounds of the Street” Studios in Sydney. In the process he will expand his knowledge of professional studios and the recording process, and ultimately be able to self-market his EP.

 

MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP INITIATIVE – TOTAL FUNDING $35,000


The management workshop aims to address the lack of practical strategies when managing a band or performer in the early phase of their career. This workshop brings together a group of significant professionals in the music industry, including Philip Stevens, Correne Wilkie, John Watson, Brett Oaten, Simon Moor, Sebastian Chase, Sally Howland, Paula Jones, Russell Thomas to name just a few!
All of these representatives from the music industry will share their knowledge and offer strategic advice on ways to enhance performers’ opportunities in the music industry. The Management Workshop will be delivered as a three day intensive, including customised personal advice.

Of the 108 applications received we are happy to announce the following successful participants in this year’s workshop:

  • Jackie Marshall is a self-managed emerging singer-songwriter who released an album ‘Fight ‘n’ Flight’ in 2006. She has completed a series of performances for the ‘Women In Voice’ Concert Series and has supported acts including Missy Higgins. Bulimba, QLD.
  • Andrew Brown manages Townsville rock band The Red Book Comics who are preparing to record and release their second EP and complete a national tour later this year. Townsville, QLD.
  • Malina Hamilton-Smith both performs in and manages Sydney alternative pop rock electro band Super Massive, recently awarded Best Alternative Artist at the 2007 MusicOz Awards. Neutral Bay, NSW.
  • Jesse Lubitz both performs in and manages Melbourne folk roots duo TinPan Orange. The band recently released their second album ‘Death, Love and Buildings’, featuring Renee Geyer. St Kilda East, VIC.
  • Saritah Newman has been managing her solo career as a soul roots artist for the past five years. In this time she has performed both in Australia and overseas, and will begin recording her second full length album shortly. Mt Claremont, QLD.
  • Paul Boon plays an active role in the musical and artistic life of Broome, WA. He manages electro acoustic band Monokira, folk blues artist Harry Jakamarra Gray, and Groovylips and The Yang, the band in which he also performs. Broome, WA.
  • Lach Hall has managed six-piece reggae roots band De Jah Groove, in which he also plays, for the last three years. The band has recorded their debut album and completed a national tour. Malvern East, VIC.
  • Rae Howell manages her own nu-chamber cinematic project the Sunwrae Ensemble. The group will be launching their third album ‘Autumn Never Fail’ with a tour scheduled for April/ May 2009. North Fitzroy, VIC.
  • Sare Lang plays bass in, and co-manages alt-acoustic band Skipping Girl Vinegar. The band completed its debut album ‘Sift The Noise’ earlier this year. Wattle Park, VIC.
  • Brad Murray runs his own indie record label, Wireless Records, whilst also managing two Melbourne-based bands, Spun Rivals and Radiant City. Both bands have performed extensively and recently released EPs. Carlton North, VIC.
  • Bianca Jade has managed her own blues-folk band for three years. Bianca has recently supported The Black Sorrows and KD Lang and is working on her first full-length album. Mosman Park, WA.
  • Bruna Chiovitti has managed Abbe May & The Rockin’ Pneumonia for the past year. The band was awarded WAMi’s ‘Best Female Vocalist’ in 2007 and 2008 and ‘Most Promising Act’ in 2008. White Gum Valley, WA.
  • Eva Popov, a contemporary folk musician, has been managing her career for the last five years. Earlier this year she won Triple J’s Fuse Music Competition and is set to release ‘Photos of the Sun’, the follow-up to her debut album. Preston, VIC.
  • Helen Ransom, of Perfect Crime Music, co-manages Adam Cousens and Linc Le Fevre & The Insiders. Adam Cousens’ ‘Running Over Rooftops’ was awarded Best Song at Tasmania’s Amplified Awards earlier this year. New Town, TAS.
  • Matt McMullen manages three rock ‘n’ roll bands, The Slim Pickins, The Belle Ends and Long Gone Midnight. The Slim Pickins will embark on a tour of the east coast this year, and each of the bands is looking forward to releasing new material in the near future. Fremantle, WA.
  • Rowan Brand co-founded Delusion Records in 2007. Since then he has represented pop rock band Freedom 1 who have supported Switchfoot and Cosima DeVito. Chester Hill, NSW.
  • Mei Lai Swan is a self-managed singer, songwriter and cellist based in Alice Springs. Mei Lai released her debut EP ‘The Morning Tree’ last year and performed throughout the Northern Territory, Victoria and Queensland; she is currently working on her debut album. Alice Springs, NT.
  • Maggie Collins manages six-piece Brisbane-based outfit The John Steel Singers. The band was named Triple J Next Crop Artist in 2007, and has performed extensively including with The Panics and Built To Spill. Paddington, QLD.
  • Leah Flanagan manages her Darwin-based band, whose debut album is soon to be released. The band has played at a number of major festivals and recently opened the Darwin Festival. Wulagi, NT.
  • Susan Clarke has managed two acoustic alt-folk acts over the past year, Xave Brown and Sue Cunningham. Xave released his second album ‘Whalebone Beach’ this year, three tracks from which have been used and performed live for the Chrissie Parrott Dance Project. Denmark, WA.
  • Noah Marley is a member of and co-manages Flow And Plenty. The band has a busy performance schedule and released an EP earlier this year. Rosanna, VIC.
  • Chloe Goodyear manages Eastern-Euro gypsy seven-piece Doch and eight-piece jazz band Miguel. Both bands have performed extensively and Doch released their third album ‘Bride in a Red Dress’ last year. New Farm, QLD.
  • Kelvin Lui manages the Indigenous Intrudaz, winners of the prestigious JB Seed Indigenous Recording for 2008. Inala, QLD.

Impossible Odds to record 5 track EP
Impossible Odds are an Indigenous Hip Hop act from Brisbane, they will travel to Sydney to record a 5 track EP with Tony Buchen in his studio. The grant will cover all costs, including Tony’s fee, studio hire, mixing and mastering, travel, accommodation, per diems, artwork and the production of 1000 copies once the EP is completed.

SOCIAL ACTIVISM THROUGH THE ARTS TOTAL FUNDING $27,250

Cultural Arts Tour [Funding grant $5,000] -Indigenous Students from the Yarrabah State School in QLD will travel to Melbourne to undertake a cultural dance tour under the guidance of Paul Sampson. Performances will take place in Federation Square in Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Zoo and various schools in the local area. Read More

Growing up two ways [Funding grant $4,350] -Malcolm McKinnon will record a documentary to pass on stories of life at Finnis Springs Aboriginal Mission whilst imparting hands on skills in digtial story telling to Reg Dodd, leader in the Marree Arabunna community. The aim is to produce a series of stories in digital multi-media for exhibitions at the Aboriginal Cultures Gallery at the South Australian Museum, the Arabunna Community Centre and Museum and on line through the Museum's 'Speaking Land' website. The final product will also be utilised as a curriculum resource in Aboriginal Education within schools and TAFE colleges by the South Australian Department of Education & Children's Services.

Anmatjere Man [Funding grant $5,000] – Based in Alice Springs Tony Scrutten and Anna Cadden of PAW Media will produce a documentary exploring the life of Anmatjere Man, Charlie Jungarrayi Cotpot, his extraordinary life and his positive influence for Anmatjere people today. The documentary will be broadcast on ICTV (Indigenous Community TV) and PAW Media will host community screening events in Anmatjere communities and submitted to various programs at the ABC.

StepUp [Funding grant $3,400] - Pip Denis and Karen Therese of the PACT Theatre Company in Erskineville will co-ordinate StepUp. StepUp will operate on a cyclic 3 tier mentoring structure. Professional Indigenous Artists will work with emerging artists (18-26yrs). The emerging Artists will then mentor & share their skills with 8-18yr olds from the Redfern Community Centre. This process will culminate in a high calibre presentation of new contemporary Aboriginal artworks, participation in Gathering Ground for The Sydney Festival 2008 & a tour of the StepUp program for presentation in the Nextwave Festival in Melbourne 2008.

Biripi and Worimi Boys [Funding grant $5,000] – Taree, NSW, Shivanii Cameron to produce a documentary about the Indigenous bush regeneration team and the cultural canoe ecotourism enterprise of the Purfleet-Taree local Aboriginal Land Council. Filming will take place betwen July and December 2007. The film will be launched in Taree, submitted to film festivals nationally and internationally, included in the Moving Lens/Rainforest Rescue national film tour in 2008, distributed to conservation councils and Aboriginal Land Councils.

The Nuclear Posters [Funding grant $4,500] - Lou Smith and Tom Sevil from Breakdown Press in Carlton, VIC will produce a collection of political posters designed by Australian Artists and writers that educate and raise awareness on the issues of Uranium mining, Nuclear testing, Nuclear weapons, Nuclear waste and a sustainable Nuclear free future. Posters to be printed and made available for sale via bookshops, stalls, websites and community organisations. Exhibitions and other distribution to take place across the East Coast of Australia.

 

PROFESSIONAL & SKILLS DEVELOPMENT TOTAL FUNDING $22,774

Eleanor Betts [Funding grant $3,000] - Eleanor from Pennant Hills, NSW will travel from Sydney to Vienna to undertake Cello lessons with Michael Williams. Michael has played as principal Cello of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and has maintained a very successful career in both Europe and Australia.

Tom Vincent [Funding grant $1,420] - Tom Vincent is a recording artist and composer from North Hobart in Tasmania. Tom will undertake private tuition in audio computer recording, sequencing and editing with local audio engineer George Goerss.

Steve Falk [Funding grant $2,200] - Steve Falk is a freelance musician from Melbourne who will travel to Tokyo to undertake a graduate course for international Marimba students. Keiko Abe from the Toho Gakuen School of Music will be conducting the master classes.

Geoff Slingsby [Funding grant $3,000] - Geoff Slingsby is one member of ‘Brittle, an energetic punk rock band from Ballina in NSW. All 3 members, Geoff, Ben and Billy will undertake music mentorships with teachers of their chosen instrument – Geoff will have drumming lessons with David Sanders, Billy will have Bass Guitar lessons with Michael Porter, Ben will have Guitar lessons with Michael Porter also, and then all 3 will have vocal lessons with Leigh Carriage. 

Dana Ogle [Funding grant $3,000] - Dana Ogle is a musician from Perth and has been an accompanist at WAAPA for contemporary dance techniques improvisation since 1998. Dana will travel to Chennai, Southern India to undertake lessons with Guru Tanjore K. Murugaboopathi in South Indian percussion instrument, Mridangam.

Glen Donnelly [Funding grant $2,800] - Glen Donnelly is a Violin and Viola player from NSW who has been playing since he was 8 years old. Glen will travel to Siena, Italy to undertake a 10 day course of Viola master classes with some of Europe's leading ensemble Artists such as Paul Silverthorne and Andriy Viytovych. 

The Funky Turtles [Funding grant $2,554] - Ballarat based band, the Funky Turtles will travel to Melbourne to undertake songwriting sessions with Rebecca Barnard. Rebecca has been singing and performing since she was 14, she formed Rebecca’s Empire who had much Australian success. Sessions will take place at the Footscray Community Arts Centre and will build on songwriting skills on an individual and group level. 

Simone Walters [Funding grant $2,800] - Simone Walters is a professional musician who has played Bassoon with the Melbourne, Queensland, Tasmanian and West Australian symphony orchestras. Simone will undertake Bassoon lessons with Matthew Wilkie at his home studio in Sydney. During his career, Matthew has held many successful orchestral positions and was appointed principal Bassoon with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in January 2000.

This workshop brings together a group of significant professionals in the music industry, including Philip Stevens - John Butler’s manager, Correne Wilkie - The Cat Empire’s manager, Brett Oaten - music industry lawyer, Simon Moor - Sony A&R and publishing, Kylie Greenlees and Sebastian Chase from MGM distribution, Richard Kingsmill from triple j, Sally Howland from APRA, Paula Jones from Jones PR, Russell Thomas an independent radio promoter, to name a few! All of these representatives from the music industry will share their knowledge and offer strategic advice on ways to enhance performers’ opportunities in the music industry. The JB Seed Initiative: Management Workshop will be delivered in a three-day intensive workshop format, complemented by customised personal advice.

Open to managers, band members who are managing themselves, and established arts workers who are considering arts management as a serious career option. The program will assist successful applicants with transport to and from the workshop, accommodation and food.

The following applicants have been funded to attend the workshop;

  • Michael Thornely from Brisbane manages local Hip Hop acts, 2 x MusicOz Awards winners “The Optimen”, world beatbox champion and MC “Tom Thum” (also known as “Tommy Illfigga”) and emerging act “Pure Product”. The Optimen and Tom Thum currently have national airplay in triple j and all three acts are signed independently. Michael has been managing for over a year
  • Jason Banicevic from Parramatta, NSW manages Matt Tonks. Matt Tonks was the MusicOz Best Alternative Artist of the year in 2006. Jason has been a musician for 15 years and has taken up management in the last couple of years.
  • Jodie Regan based in Fremantle, WA manages The Kill Devil Hills – multi WAMi Award winning 6 piece band. The KDH recently won the ‘Best Blues N Roots” WAMi for the third year in a row and have a very strong underground following all around the country. Jodie also manages Mink Mussel Creek – WAMi Award winning 5 piece. Jodie has been managing since November 2004.
  • Liam Griffin , a self managed singer songwriter from Brisbane, has released his debut EP ‘Pictures’ through his own label, Mailbox records. Liam gained 2nd place in the Bar Soma Singer Songwriter search and has been invited to showcase at the North by North East Festival in Toronto, Canada.
  • Tania Wilson Hughesdale in Victoria manages a 4 piece alternative rock act, Sydonia. Tania started doing publicity but upon seeing Sydonia live, 12 months ago, decided to take on their management.
  • Gordon Anderson from Adelaide manages Mere Theory, a 4 piece melodic rock act. Gordon has been working with Mere Theory for a little over 2 years, in that time he has negotiated a number of opportunities including, 4 tours, festival appearances and a television appearance. Last year the band was selected for the Emily Burrows award for emerging South Australian artists.
  • Dave Mann from Fremantle, WA and formed the Dave Mann collective as well as managing the band. The Dave Mann collective have toured WA extensively and have successfully undertaken national tours bi-annually. Dave has been responsible for booking gigs, budgeting, publicity, logistics and grant writing for the band.
  • Nadia Onus - Nadia is based in Mulgoa, NSW and manages two bands, Amberdeen and Painted Stones. Nadia started her own humble management firm out of her bedroom when she was 17, she has been managing Amberdeen since late 2005 and Painted Stones since September 2006.
  • Kelt Twidale, a self managed singer songwriter from Armadale in Victoria. He has 6 years of practical experience managing his own bookings, accounting, publicity and recording projects.
  • Jasmine Abbott based out of Perth and manages The Sneaky Weasel Gang a fresh young band from Mandurah (about an hour out of the city) and a Perth band, Zarm. Jasmine has been involved in the entertainment industry working in promotions, marketing, event management and booking gigs.
  • Sarah-Jane Wentzki, a solo musician Abbotsford, VIC who performs under the name of Princess One Point Five. Sarah has been managing her solo career for the last few years (since inception) and has successfully booked and arranged a single launch, two album launches and performances in Melbourne and Sydney.
  • Buzz Thompson from Melbourne manages Dan Sultan, an Indigenous singer songwriter. Buzz has been managing Dan since 2005 and has also managed the Roys in 2004.
  • Britta Decker from Darwin in Northern Territory and manages emerging artist Taska Urban. Britta has a graduate diploma in business administration and has worked extensively with Yothu Yindi as their European co-ordinator. Over the last 5 years Britta has been managing the contemporary music association of Music NT for the Northern Territory.
  • Isaac Graham from Birchgrove in NSW, plays in and manages Old Kent Road, a punk rock band. Old Kent Road have spent most of 2006 gigging across their hometown of Sydney. In November 2006 Old Kent Road independently released and launched their debut EP, the Ep title track received airplay on triple j’s Home and Hosed, whilst another track was added to C rotation on FBI radio.
  • Neda Rahmani based in Northcote, VIC manages her solo career as a singer, performer and percussionist. Neda has been performing with Artists such as Joe Camilleri, Nicky Bomba, Josh Owen and The Red Eyes.
  • Dario Philips based in Glenorchy Tasmania manages Hannah, who formed in 2006. Dario has been responsible for organizing gigs, preparing promotional material, merchandising products, overseeing financial aspects of the business and maintaining the website.
  • Ronit Granot based in East Brunswick in Victoria and manages Shemesh, a 4 piece group that she also fronts. Shemesh have gigged throughout Victoria and have also toured through the East Coast of Australia. Ronit advertises for gigs, books shows, handles recording as well as showcase and festival bookings.
  • Deb Suckling from Brisbane has managed Brindle for the past 6 years. During that time Brindle has released 3 EP’s independently, 2 singles, a full length debut album whilst touring nationally and internationally. Deb has recently established her own label, Sugar Rush Records.
  • Deb Bond from Byron Bay has been managing her solo career for the last 5 years. Deb has supported acts such as Tex Perkins, Jeff Lang, Archie Roach, Deborah Conway and Mia Dyson.
  • Dan Banks is the front man of Canberra based band the Dan Banks Band. Dan has been working as both musician and manager since the band formed. The band have established a strong fan base in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney through solid gigging.
  • Marcus Ross manages Direct Influence a 6 piece reggae/soul/hip hop outfit based in Melbourne. Marcus is the guitarist in the band and has successfully booked 3 East Coast tours. Direct Influence also regularly play shows in Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide.
  • Kim Queen from Bondi Beach manages Waiting for Guinness, a 6 piece act. WFG have played festivals such as, Woodford Folk Festival, Fairbridge Festival, The Great Escape and National Folk Festival and were invited to perform at Montreux Jazz Festival in 2005.
  • Mickie Selton from Cairns manages Ancient Instinct, an Indigenous Hip Hop act. Mickie organizes the Reggaefest held annually in far north Queensland and has organized tours, publicity campaigns, stages and music marketing for national and international touring acts.

PUB 69 Illzilla [Funding grant $7,750]
Illzila wish to market and publicise the debut self titled EP by undertaking a 10 day tour through Melbourne, Sydney, Lismore, Ballina, Byron Bay, Brisbane and Coolum.

SOCIAL ACTIVISM – TOTAL FUNDING $22,800

SA 09 Master Peace Wall [Funding grant $3,100]
The Master Peace Wall will be an out of school hours project run by the St George Youth Services. They will target students in years 9 and 10 in local government high schools. The students are of backgrounds other than English speaking [mostly Muslin and Arabic] and are referred, as they are perceived as being ‘at risk’. The aim of the project is to run workshops in mural/graffiti art [with youth workers present] and to expand on and complete a mural. Matthew Peet, a local artist from Peetersham Creative services, will facilitate the workshops; he will also oversee the mural. This project hopes to encourage local youth to use legal space for their artwork and promote peace and harmony within the community, particularly in light of the recent race riots in Cronulla. 

SA 28 How Radiation Makes You Sick [Funding grant $5,000]
How Radiation Makes You Sick will be run by the Medical Association for the Prevention of War and will produce an illustrated booklet aimed at Indigenous communities explaining the health risks associated with Nuclear activities and facilities in an accessible, but scientifically sound, manner. MAPW aims to reproduce the speech Dr Bill Williams gave at the Alliance meeting but will include language common to some of the central lands people, into a book form, illustrated by an Indigenous artist from the central lands of Australia. This project is important because too often the nuclear industry trivialise the health impacts of ionizing radiation. The aim of this booklet is to inform and empower Indigenous communities facing the imposition of uranium mines and/or radioactive waste dumps.

SA 41 Club Refugees [Funding grant $4,700]
Club Refugees is a project to be undertaken by members of Actors for Refugees. It will see the development and soft launch of a new version of their touring show ‘Club Refuge’; a public reading by professional actors with improvised musical accompaniment, of moving and inspiring stories of refugees and asylum seekers living in Australia, their struggles to survive and to maintain their dignity, and their connections and friendships with Australian neighbors and supporters. The project is due to take place in August or September 2006 and will then tour all over metropolitan and regional Victoria.

SA 48 Climate of Hope [Funding grant $5,000]
Climate of Hope is a 20-minute DVD demonstrating why Nuclear power is no solution to climate change. The main argument shows how Nuclear energy is a big carbon emitter; the objective is to make this somewhat technical argument vividly understood by the layperson. The DVD is in pre-production and is estimated to be ready for release in August 2006. Once the DVD is completed it will be delivered through public meetings, direct mail to journalists, MP’s, triplej, local film festivals, independent outlets and community activists. 

SA 55 Agents of Change – Arabic Youth Film [Funding grant $5,000]
Agents of Change is a program affecting social change through the Arts for young Arabic people resulting in a video resource that can be used by Arts, educational, migrant and governmental organizations. The project would take place in three stages: leadership camps take place with young Arabic men and young Arabic women to develop the content of the film, 10 week film making workshops and then a tour of community centers in Western Sydney to showcase the film. Agents of Change will be run by the Information and Cultural Exchange centre in Parramatta, NSW and will begin in August 2006. 

 

PROFESSIONAL & SKILLS DEVELOPMENT – TOTAL FUNDING $15,600

PRF 01 Krista Polvere [Funding grant $3,000]
Krista Polvere is a singer/songwriter from Melbourne who will travel to New York to work with Mark Swersky on her songwriting skills. Mark Swersky has credits with Joe Cocker, Roger Daltrey, Hilary Duff, Diesel and Renee Geyer among others. 

PRF 07 Lazare Agneskis [Funding grant $3,000]
Lazare Agneskis is a musician/songwriter based in Melbourne, ‘In Bloom’ is a solo project he started 2 years ago and has released a debut EP ‘Haylee’. Lazare would like to undertake development sessions with Paul Kelly to work on his songwriting skills and develop songs 

PRF 12 Laurence Meikle [Funding grant $1,500]
Laurence Meikle has been studying to become an opera singer for the last 4 years and is currently studying at the Victorian College of the Arts. He has performed several leading roles in operas with all of Melbourne’s opera companies. Laurence would like to travel to Sydney for one week to undertake intensive private opera language lessons with the staff of Opera Australia including world-renowned conductors and language coaches. 

PRF 14 Scott Benning [Funding grant $2,000]
Scott Benning is a Sitar player based in Sydney; he started playing Sitar in 1996 under classical Indian sitar player Pandit Ashok Roy and is currently teaching private students. Scott has studied North Indian classical music at the Rotterdam Conservatory in Holland. Scott performed and taught during his stay in Holland and was invited to perform at the 2000 World Music Conference in Rotterdam. Scott wishes to travel to Calcutta in December 2006 to undertake further training with Siddharth Kishna.

PRF 15 Claudia Chambers [Funding grant $1,200]
Claudia Chambers is a Flamenco and Spanish percussionist who began studying 7 years ago while in Europe. Claudia has been performing in places such as the Bellingen Flamenco Festival, Sydney Spanish Film Festival opening, NAIDOC week, Café Carnivale, Brisbane Multicultural Festival, City of Sydney Spanish quarter festival and the Sydney Festival. Claudia wishes to expand her versatility as a musician/teacher by studying Tabla with highly respected Tabla player Bobby Singh in Sydney. 

PRF 20 Alisha Brooks [Funding grant $2,000]
Alisha Brooks is a saxaphone/clarinet/piano player based in Melbourne, she has been playing Turkish music for the last 5 years and wishes to travel to Turkey to embark on a course of study in traditional Romany music of Turkey. Alisha would study with two prominent Romany musicians. Savas Zurnaci – G clarinet, and Ahmet Elbasan – Zurna [traditional double reed instrument]. The lessons with Savas will be taken on the saxaphone [principal instrument] and G clarinet [second instrument]. The lessons with Ahmet will be taken on Zurna. All sessions will take place in Istanbul and Kirklareli during July and August 2006. Alisha is currently playing with Unified Gecko and Sultan and she recently performed for the Prime Minister of Turkey on his visit to Melbourne. 

8 Ball Aitken [Funding grant $2,900]
8 Ball Aitken is a Brisbane based roots artist. 8 Ball has performed in venues such as the Woodford Folk Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Earthbeat Festival, Gympie Muster and has supported Xavier Rudd at the Carrara Stadium. 8 Ball wishes to undertake tuition from expert pedal steel guitar player and songwriter Michel Rose who is based in Sydney. The sessions would take place over 4 intensive days in October 2006.

 

MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP – TOTAL FUNDING $30,000

The management workshop is an initiative of the JB Seed Fund established in 2006. This program aims to address the lack of practical strategies and their implementation when managing a band or performer in the establishment phase of their career. This workshop brings together a group of significant professionals in the music industry, including Philip Stevens - John Butler’s manager, Correne Wilkie - The Cat Empire’s manager, Brett Oaten - music industry lawyer, Simon Moor - Sony A&R and publishing, Kylie Greenlees and Sebastian Chase from MGM distribution, Chris Scaddan from triple j, Sally Howland from APRA, Paula Jones from Jones PR, Russell Thomas an independent radio promoter, Owen Orford from trading post booking agency, to name a few! All of these representatives from the music industry will share their knowledge and offer strategic advice on ways to enhance performers’ opportunities in the music industry. The JB Seed Initiative: Management Workshop will be delivered in a three day intensive workshop format, complemented by customised personal advice.

It is open to managers, band members who are managing themselves, and established arts workers who are considering arts management as a serious career option. The program will assist successful applicants with transport to and from the workshop, accommodation and food.

Here are the applicants we will fund to attend the workshop;

MW 01 Erin Wheatley
Erin Wheatley is managing the Mason Rack Band who were named in the top 5 of the ‘Best Blues Act’ MusicOz awards in 2005. She has been managing the band for 9 months and has managed to secure them a record deal with a company on the Gold Coast.

MW 02 Jodie Weber
Jodie Weber has been managing Poetikool Justice for 1 year, during that time Poetikool Justice have won the 2006 Awesam Award for best Hip Hop act, recorded an EP and have secured gigs all over Adelaide.

MW 04 Mick Daley
Mick Daly is manager and band member of the Re-Mains, a 5-piece country rock’n’roll band based in Northern NSW. He has been actively managing them for 4 years, prior to this he was managing himself as a solo artist and touring throughout Europe. Mick has a background as a freelance photo journalist.

MW 07 Katherine Beard
Katherine Beard manages 3 independent bands, Kaya, The Extended Family band and the G. Nunan project. All three bands are independent and Katherine has seen them through single, EP and album launches, as well as tours and constant gigging. Katherine has a law degree as well as experience as an editor and is a published author.

MW 08 Kate Mills
Kate Mills is currently studying Arts Management at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts [WAAPA]; she is a member of the Surefire Midnights and manages the Surefire Midnights, the Jacknives and the Kuillotines. Kate has been organizing, booking and promoting all three bands in conjunction with managing bands finances and securing international and national supports for all 3 acts.

MW 10 Megan Bowman
Megan Bowman is a solo singer/songwriter who fuses roots, jazz and pop. She has learnt to manage herself as a necessity; she has been attending conferences, playing showcases. Megan has produced the recording of her debut album in NYC, co-ordinated her own album funding, booked gigs both in Australia and North America and has also been marketing and promoting herself.

MW 12 Marion Gingell
Marion Gingell manages 2 acts, singer songwriters Steve Romig and Jessica Paige. Jessica Paige recently won the APRA award at MusicOz. Marion entered Steve Romig in an international songwriting competition in Nashville and Steve was successful in the Blues category. Marion has been writing press releases for both acts as well as managing all other aspects of their careers.

MW 16 Ebrima Marong
Ebrima Marong is a solo artist [King Marong] as well as band member of Super Afro Mandiriko, he takes all of this own bookings and facilitates workshops and tours. He has worked on several recordings as co-manager. Ebrima does not have a permanent manager and wishes to gain the skills necessary to successfully manage himself.

MW 23 Tracey Robertson
Tracey Robertson manages Loren, a Brisbane based, acoustic singer/songwriter. Tracey has set up and managed a small original live music venue, which has now closed. She has been booking gigs, applying to festivals, marketing, publicity, tour logistics, grant applications and merchandise concepts and design and generally managing all other aspects of Loren’s career.

MW 27 Kimberley Morley
Kimberley Morley manages Pink Stik, a 5-piece band based on the NSW mid north coast. Kimberley has previously worked with a youth events organization ‘Youth Alive NSW’ and during her time with them sourced up to 67 local and international artists and managed tours through local schools, universities and clubs.

MW 28 Dane Hunnerup
Dane Hannerup manages the Scientists of Modern Music a 2-piece electro/pop act based in Tasmania. Dane has previously managed bands he has been a member of. Dane has been booking the Scientists of Modern Music gigs all over Tasmania as well as securing them as a headlining act for the Hobart Fringe Festival opening party.

MW 37 Kristen Maher
Kristen Maher is managing Sin City, a 4-piece hard rock/pop act. Kristen has completed a music business course and has been helping out with managing her husband’s band for the past 5 years. She has recently taken over managing Sin City and they are planning releases, tours and promotions.

MW 38 Cilla Jane Leighton-Daly
Cilla Jane has been managing herself as an independent artist for the last 3 years. She has funded and recorded her own EP, a blend of storytelling and folk style music, she creates all of her own promotional and marketing material in a professional manner. Cilla has also designed her own website and is booking all of her own gigs.

MW 39 Elizabeth Kilby
Elizabeth Kilby is managing ‘Kafka’ one of the most frequently performing groups on the Brisbane music scene. Elizabeth’s previous experience includes producer of straight out of Brisbane festival 2006, production manager SOOBIESTA 06 [largest event at Brisbane’s valley Fiesta], former manager of world music act ‘Doch’ 2005-2006 and producer of Q Music big sounds emerging artists showcase.

MW 40 Nasrine Rahmani
Nasrine Rahmani has managed herself as a professional musician since 1999. During this time she has funded her own professional development overseas trips and recorded and played with many highly successful bands and artists including the Cat Empire, Alex Lloyd and Dan Greenwood. She is now managing San Lazaro a 9-piece band based in Melbourne.

MW 48 Matt Irvin
Matt Irvin is managing Matt Sawyer a folk pop solo artist based in Perth and also Dusk, a blues and roots act from Fremantle of which he is a member. Matt’s experience includes booking the Swan bar acoustic lounge in Fremantle under the guidance of Nigel Bird [organiser of the WAMI festival and awards] and running his own boutique independent record label called Canopy Records.

MW 52 Alex Beck
Alex Beck manages the Harlequin Smile a Melbourne based melodic/experimental rock band. He has booked all of their gigs including Big Day Out 2006, AMW 2006 and a host of others at various Melbourne venues. The Harlequin Smile, thanks to Alex, has appeared on channel 10’s music program the Big Night In.

MW 54 Alison McLean
Alison McLean is managing Birds of Tokyo a 4 piece, Perth based alternative rock band. Alison has secured a number of headlining gigs at Perth’s premier venues, launched a double A side single, worked on creating a mailing list database and financial system and has organised a number of small regional tours for the band. Alison is currently finalizing a mini-national tour of WA, Sydney and Melbourne.

MW 55 Julian Abrahams
Julian Abrahams has been a co-founder of 8-piece live funk/hip hop act Casual Projects and is currently managing the band. Casual Projects has secured national distribution through MGM, and have recently played Bar Open, the Espy front bar and the Cat and Fiddle in Sydney.

MW 59 Mark Smith
Mark Smith is managing Drum Drum, a band that he is also a member of. Drum Drum are a world music act based in the NT. Drum Drum recently performed at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and have toured throughout Europe, UK and the USA.
