The JB Seed - an arts grant fund. Now in its fourth year, this project is unique in its ability to pull together the established and the emerging within the arts community to share resources and knowledge, subsequently creating a sense of community. This is achieved while maintaining the flexibility to operate in a responsive manner, to offer what artists in the establishment phase of their career require to assist them in becoming self sustained.

This year sees the inclusion of some new funding opportunities created to honour the memory and the tireless work of the late Jacqui McCoy (Geia). Jacqui devoted much of her life to assisting disadvantaged artists from all backgrounds, and in particular Indigenous Australian artists. Find out more about the THE JACQUI McCOY (GEIA) TRUST

Of 2008 round of funding for The JB Seed, John Butler said today:

“When starting The JB Seed 5 years ago, Danielle and I always hoped it would one day grow into something bigger than just a grants body funded by the Trio’s success. As the years have passed our expectations have been surpassed by the generosity of so many. The fund has become bigger than the sum of its parts with contributions, financial and in kind, from artists and associates including the legendary Paul Kelly and Missy Higgins, industry icons Sebastian Chase (MGM Distribution), Richard Kingsmill (Triple J), and John Woodruff (Rough Cut Music). Other arts philanthropists who have also been moved to contribute include Maureen Ritchie and Paul Gilding (ECOSCORP). As the fund grows I am continually excited by the potential impact the successful applicants can have on the Australian arts community. Bring it on.” John Butler

Live at the Quarry Support the JB SEED

A series of nine concerts held at the magnificent Quarry Amphitheatre each Sunday evening from February to April 08, Live at the Quarry boasts a line up including jazz virtuosos James Morrison, Vince Jones and Bojeme, rock icons The Black Sorrows and Richard Clapton, and indi/folk gurus Kate Miller-Heidke, Holly Throsby, Whitley and Old Man River! Tickets to Live at the Quarry shows can be purchased individually or as season passes, and are available through The Quarry Amphitheatre or BOCS Ticketing.

Event goers will also be helping to foster a vibrant local arts community, with part proceeds going to the JB Seed Arts Fund

NEWS POST 11/9/07: Successful Applicants for 2007 announced!

The JB Seed Arts Grant Program announces successful applicants for 2007.

Since it’s inception in 2005, The JB Seed Grant Program has received more than 947 applications and, through the Australia Business Arts Foundation (AbaF) proudly supported 115 projects throughout Australia.

Each year the categories of the program are fine tuned in order to be responsive to the full scope of what emerging artists really need, to identify and implement their visions and support their endeavours.

The JB Seed strives to empower artists, and arts workers to effectively represent themselves in the industry in a self-sufficient manner. In line with this approach, one of the highlights of the program is the Management Workshop. John Butler, his partner Danielle Caruana and the JB Seed Crew successfully launched the Management Workshop last October in Katoomba when 20 budding managers/artists gathered for three intensive days of Music Management skills building. Due to its overwhelming success last year, 20 new applicants have been awarded a place for the workshop this year, which will again take place in October in Katoomba.

In line with developing the program to reflect trends in the music scene, the JB seed this year announced the introduction of a special Hip Hop competition. The successful applicant of this category will also be invited to attend the Management workshop. Without further ado we are pleased to announce the successful applicants of the 2007 round of funding along with a brief comment from John Butler:

Of this year’s applicants for The JB Seed Arts Grants Program, John Butler said,

“When starting this project we were inspired by the amount of diverse talent there is in this country. This year’s round of The JB Seed is testament to that. The successful applicants of 2007 are from many different backgrounds, influences, and mediums. Not only are we proud to be able to assist in one small part of any artist’s journey, but I am truly inspired by the caliber of art, drive and vision that is displayed through the program. We are also so honored this year to have welcomed in so many financial supporters to the project, including Paul Kelly, Correne Wilkie (Manager, The Cat Empire), Paul and Michelle Gilding (Ecoscorp) Maureen Ritchie, Missy Higgins, John Watson (Eleven Music), John Woodruff (JWM Productions), Sebastian Chase (MGM Distribution) and Philip Stevens (Jarrah Records). It is an honour to be in partnership with so many other artists and associates in supporting and developing these emerging successful applicants. We look forward to further strengthening and developing this over the next few years. Congratulations to all the successful applicants.” - John Butler

ROLLING STONE SUPPORTS THE JB SEED

The April edition of Rolling Stone had a feature article on The JB Seed Arts Grant Fund. Also included was a free CD of The JB Seed community showcasing artists that have contributed to the fund and artists that have benefited from it. Amongst other great tracks this compilation includes two special demo songs from Missy Higgins and The John Butler Trio’s upcoming releases.

Rolling Stone are also made a contribution for every one of this edition of the magazine sold back into the fund!
